World of Warcraft: Forever has significantly weakened the Undead race ahead of its November 4 launch, undermining what had been one of the expansion's most compelling character options. The change comes after an extended beta period that ran from mid-September through late October, during which Blizzard tested numerous balance adjustments across races and classes.

The Undead Paladin combination represents a historic milestone for the franchise, marking the first time players can combine these two previously incompatible options. However, the racial passive ability Touch of the Grave—the primary draw for selecting Undead—has been substantially altered in the final beta patch. Originally, the ability triggered on any hit with a low activation rate, draining 5 percent of an enemy's health and converting it into healing for the player. The mechanic had no meaningful cooldown, allowing it to activate frequently during combat.
Blizzard's revision introduces a fixed 20 percent activation chance for melee attacks and 30 percent for spells, but now imposes a 25-second cooldown between procs. This cooldown fundamentally changes the ability's utility, making it too infrequent to meaningfully contribute to either damage output or healing. During beta testing, Undead characters had consistently ranked at the top of damage-per-second parses, but the cooldown addition makes that performance unlikely going forward.
The nerf becomes even more consequential when viewed alongside buffs distributed to nearly every other playable race. Humans received enhanced critical strike chance and Spirit bonuses. Dwarves and Tauren both gained increased critical damage and healing improvements, with Tauren's War Stomp ability also strengthened. Trolls received health regeneration increases, while Orcs got generalized critical chance improvements despite a separate nerf to their Blood Fury ability. Skyborne Elves doubled their Haste bonus from 1 percent to 3 percent. Gnomes received particularly substantial buffs that position them among the game's strongest racial options.
Undead retain access to Cannibalize, an active ability providing health and mana restoration between dungeon encounters, along with Will of the Forsaken and Underwater Breathing passives. However, these alternatives cannot compensate for Touch of the Grave's diminished impact. The race has effectively shifted from being one of the expansion's most desirable options to one of its weakest, mirroring the Undead's underperformance in World of Warcraft's retail version.
The Legacy System in World of Warcraft: Forever accelerates alternate character progression by granting talent points earlier than normal progression would allow, making racial bonuses more relevant when building multiple characters. This makes the Undead nerf particularly impactful for players planning to create alts.
Blizzard has indicated that additional balance adjustments will continue during the game's early weeks following launch, leaving open the possibility of revisiting the Touch of the Grave cooldown. However, no official commitment to reverting or further modifying the change has been announced. The expansion launches with various other improvements, including new Druid forms and innovative items designed to expand build possibilities across classes.
