World of Warcraft: Forever is receiving significant racial ability adjustments in a patch released just days before the classic-era throwback MMO goes live, with tauren receiving a particularly dramatic movement speed enhancement.
The changes reflect Blizzard's decision to embrace class-specific advantages for certain races rather than pursue perfect balance across the board. This approach makes sense given that WoW: Forever will operate in an era where racial traits had far greater impact on character performance than they do in the modern version of the game. Some abilities synergize directly with particular classes, while others provide quality-of-life improvements that compound over the hundreds of hours players will spend leveling.
Among the notable adjustments, orcs are losing their critical strike chance bonus in favor of increased pet damage specifically for warlocks and hunters. The skyborne, a new blue elf race, had their Read Leyline ability significantly nerfed. This racial trait, which accelerated health and mana regeneration, was cut in half after being deemed too powerful. The ability remains useful but no longer provides an overwhelming advantage.
The tauren, however, received an unexpected buff that transforms them into the fastest race in the game. Blizzard has implemented a passive ability that increases movement speed the longer a tauren remains in motion. This stacks on top of Plainsrunning, their existing racial ability that already granted 30% faster movement. The new patch effectively doubles this bonus to 60%, allowing tauren to match the speed of mounts that cost hundreds of gold to acquire. The change comes at the cost of minor damage reductions for the race.
The decision to push tauren movement speed to such extremes appears intentional, playing on a long-standing joke within the WoW community. Players have traditionally mocked tauren for moving slowly, attributing this perception to their massive size and the resulting slow-motion appearance of their running animation compared to smaller races. With this patch, that criticism has been inverted entirely.
Making such fundamental changes to racial abilities this close to launch carries significant risk. While Blizzard has committed to regularly balancing WoW: Forever going forward, racial traits represent foundational mechanics that become difficult to alter without generating substantial player backlash once the game launches. Even if most players never consult tier lists comparing race and class combinations, these changes will inevitably shape the competitive meta that emerges in high-end PvP and raiding content.
The patch notes reveal Blizzard's willingness to create meaningful differences between races rather than homogenizing them, a philosophy that could define the early competitive landscape of WoW: Forever.
