Blizzard’s decision to announce major titles years ahead of their expected release dates raised eyebrows at this year’s BlizzCon. The studio revealed StarCraft will return in 2030 as an open-world shooter, while Diablo 5 is slated for 2029—announcements that left many observers skeptical given the industry’s well-documented history of delays.
The timing feels particularly unusual for Diablo, which saw an 11-year gap between its third and fourth installments. The gap between Diablo 4 and its announced sequel will be just six years, making the early reveal seem premature. Industry observers have grown accustomed to treating such distant release windows with skepticism, mentally adding “at the earliest” to any timeline more than a few years out.

Blizzard president Johanna Faries addressed the strategy in remarks to media ahead of the event. She framed the early announcements as a statement of intent, emphasizing that the company intends to deliver on its promises. Faries stressed that Blizzard aims to release major titles on schedule and with full organizational commitment to ensure these projects succeed.
The announcement strategy may also serve a secondary purpose. Microsoft, Blizzard’s parent company, has conducted multiple rounds of layoffs across its gaming division, with additional cuts expected in the coming year. Publicly showcasing a robust pipeline of major projects could signal to stakeholders and potential employees that the studio remains stable and well-resourced, even amid broader industry uncertainty.
Faries did not directly address concerns about potential job losses but emphasized her commitment to fostering a healthy workplace environment. She described BlizzCon as an opportunity to create a moment of celebration for both staff and fans, and stated her focus on maintaining what she called Blizzard’s distinctive culture and creative identity.
The executive framed the company’s performance as mutually beneficial to Microsoft, suggesting that Blizzard’s success should be viewed as a win for both the studio and its corporate owner. Her remarks underscored an effort to project confidence in the company’s direction during a period of industry-wide uncertainty and consolidation.
