A new project called Crafting Apps is introducing a collection of free, open-source creative tools designed to challenge the dominance of expensive proprietary software like Adobe's suite. Developed by the ArtCraft team, the initiative brings together seven applications spanning image editing, vector graphics, video production, and more.
The suite includes PhotoCraft for image editing, VectorCraft for vector illustration, FilmCraft for video editing, LightCraft for photo organization and RAW processing, PrintCraft for PDF handling, EffectCraft for motion graphics and visual effects, and DesignCraft for page layout and publishing. Each application targets a specific creative discipline, offering functionality comparable to established industry standards.
All tools are built using the Rust programming language and support Windows, macOS, and Linux, with several offering browser-based versions for added accessibility. A key distinction from commercial alternatives is that Crafting Apps publishes its source code openly, enabling developers to review, modify, and contribute to ongoing development.
Potential users should note that the project remains in early stages. Several applications are currently in alpha versions, while others are still under construction. This means features may be incomplete and stability issues could occur compared to mature creative software.
Despite these limitations, Crafting Apps represents a significant effort to democratize creative tools for artists, designers, and content creators who face financial barriers to professional-grade software. The project invites interested users to explore available builds and monitor development progress as the suite matures.
