Sony has revealed a collector's edition for the upcoming God of War Laufey, priced at £129.99 in the UK, but the premium box notably excludes a copy of the game itself. The collector's edition became available for pre-order in the UK on the morning of its announcement, with a US release expected later the same day at 10 am local time, though the American pricing has not yet been confirmed and could reach approximately $170.
The box contains three exclusive items designed to justify its substantial cost. Players will receive a miniature artbook, an Oracle Deck featuring 51 unique cards that illustrate different moments from protagonist Faye's story, and a detailed statue serving as the collection's centerpiece. The statue portrays Faye mid-combat, wielding her sword while using an enemy for leverage. Accompanying her is Phranque, a sentient cube character voiced by Jack Quaid who will travel alongside Faye throughout the game. The statue's design incorporates multiple smaller Phranques throughout its structure, with indications that the character may feature lighting effects.

The product listing explicitly states that the game is sold separately, a disclaimer that has become standard practice for premium gaming editions in recent years. At the UK price point, purchasing the collector's box alone would effectively cost approximately £80 beyond the game's separate purchase price, making the statue and accessories the primary draw for collectors.
This approach mirrors a broader industry trend that has generated considerable consumer frustration. Earlier in 2024, the Grand Theft Auto 6 collector's edition similarly excluded the game despite commanding a premium price. That edition took an unexpectedly long time to sell out despite massive demand for GTA 6 merchandise, suggesting consumer hesitation toward such pricing structures. The GTA 6 collector's box carried an even steeper price tag than the Laufey edition, which may have contributed to its sluggish sales performance.
The timing of this announcement arrives as PlayStation continues pushing toward an all-digital future, with the company planning to discontinue physical disc support by January 2028. God of War Laufey is scheduled to release well before that deadline. The combination of the collector's edition pricing strategy and Sony's broader shift away from physical media has renewed concerns among players about the direction of premium gaming releases and the value proposition of collector's editions going forward.
