Valve has introduced a major redesign to Steam's achievement system through a new client beta update, addressing long-standing frustrations for completion-focused players. The changes allow developers to organize achievements into distinct sets tailored to their games, such as character-specific accomplishments or campaign milestones, while separating base game achievements from DLC and seasonal content.
One of the most significant improvements tackles a persistent problem: previously, when a game received DLC with additional achievements, players who had achieved 100% completion would see that percentage drop, even if they had no interest in playing the new content. The updated system preserves base game completion percentages independently, so players can maintain their 100% status without being forced to pursue DLC achievements. This approach also applies to seasonal achievements, which are now treated as temporary sets tied to specific events or battle passes that don't affect the base game's achievement count.

The redesigned achievements page consolidates information into a single view, displaying overall completion progress alongside individual achievement status. A notable new feature allows players to compare their achievements with up to three friends simultaneously, a capability that has been standard on PlayStation consoles for years. This addition brings Steam closer to parity with console platforms in terms of social achievement tracking.
Several games have already adopted the new system, including titles across various genres: Against the Storm, Age of Wonders 4, American Truck Simulator, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Crusader Kings III, DREDGE, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Forza Horizon 5, Flock Around, He is Coming, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, PowerWash Simulator, PowerWash Simulator 2, Team Fortress 2, and Victoria 3. However, adoption remains limited as the system is still in beta testing.
The update is currently available through Steam's Client Beta program. Based on Valve's typical rollout timeline for beta features, the changes are expected to reach the main client within approximately a month. Players interested in testing the new achievement system early can opt into the beta, though they can also wait for the full release.
