Virtual reality game developer Polyarc has announced its closure after nearly a dozen years in operation, with at least 29 employees now seeking new positions according to a recruiting sheet shared with the studio's announcement.
The Seattle-based studio disclosed the shutdown through a LinkedIn post, stating that its time as a collective has ended and that the team is parting ways as active development winds down. The company expressed gratitude for the opportunity to create games and bring entertainment to players over the years.
Polyarc became known for its Moss franchise, which gained recognition as an early standout in virtual reality gaming. The series distinguished itself through its unique blend of action-adventure gameplay and an innovative camera system that allowed players to examine levels from multiple angles while controlling Quill, a mouse character central to the story. The original Moss launched on PlayStation VR before being ported to Oculus Quest as a launch title. The sequel, Moss: Book II, expanded to multiple platforms including PSVR, Quest, SteamVR, and Pico. The studio also developed Glassbreakers, a multiplayer strategy game for Apple Vision Pro.
In May 2026, Polyarc attempted to broaden its audience beyond VR enthusiasts by releasing Moss: The Forgotten Relic, which consolidated the series into a single game playable without a VR headset. However, the title's performance apparently proved insufficient to sustain the studio's operations.
The closure reflects broader challenges facing the VR industry. Meta, a major force in the sector, shifted its strategic focus toward artificial intelligence at the beginning of this year, closing several of its own VR studios in the process. This corporate pivot likely complicated funding prospects for independent VR developers seeking to greenlight new projects.
Despite the studio's closure, all Polyarc games remain available for purchase across their respective platforms, offering potential entry points for players with VR hardware seeking quality titles.
