Rockstar Games has stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 will arrive without microtransactions or generative artificial intelligence, marking a notable stance as the studio prepares for the game's November release.
The developer made the announcement during a conversation with gaming media outlet Kinda Funny Games ahead of the GTA 6: Extended Look presentation. When asked directly about real-money purchases, Rockstar indicated the game contains no monetisation systems at launch. The studio similarly confirmed that generative AI played no role in the game's development.
The position reflects a broader philosophy at Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive. Earlier this year, Take-Two disbanded its dedicated AI team, including its head of artificial intelligence. Company leader Strauss Zelnick has previously argued that AI lacks genuine creative capability, a stance that diverges sharply from industry trends. Numerous major studios—including Krafton, Square Enix, and EA—have embraced AI tools for development and content creation.
Despite the absence of launch microtransactions, Rockstar is offering tiered editions of GTA 6. The standard version costs £70, while an Ultimate Edition priced at £90 includes exclusive cosmetics, vehicles, weapons, and access to specific shops and services. These additions feature the Electric Fang tattoo parlour and Stock 305 clothing store, with content distributed throughout the game's story and unlocked progressively. Standard edition owners can purchase the Ultimate Edition upgrade separately after claiming their base copy.
Grand Theft Auto 6 launches November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Recent reveals have detailed numerous gameplay changes, including modifications to the wanted system, carjacking mechanics, a new romance feature, an expanded game world, and expanded activities. The development approach emphasises realism and narrative depth, though some observers have noted this represents a significant creative risk for the franchise.
