A PC mod has made one of Baldur's Gate 3's most devastating spells available to players, granting access to a 9th-level ability that was previously locked away in the game's code.
Power Word Ruin, originally built for the god-form epilogue sequence featuring the character Gale, has been extracted from the base game and made learnable through a new mod. According to the mod's creator JThug, the spell exists in the game as a fully developed, voiced, and localized ability—it simply wasn't accessible during normal gameplay. The spell unleashes three beams of magical force that combine to deal between 150 and 300 damage, calculated as 30d6 + 120 force damage at maximum power.
Players on PC can obtain the spell in two ways. The simplest method involves using a Power Word Ruin scroll, which functions like any other consumable spell scroll in the game and can be cast by any character. However, those who want to learn the spell permanently face a significant hurdle: Baldur's Gate 3's standard level cap only reaches level 12, allowing characters to cast up to 6th-level spells. Since Power Word Ruin is a 9th-level ability, players will need an additional mod that raises the character level cap to 20 in order to learn it.
The spell's power far exceeds most conventional magic available in the vanilla game. For comparison, the only similarly devastating ability accessible through legitimate gameplay is Power Word Kill, which instantly eliminates targets with 100 hit points or fewer. This ability becomes available to players who embrace the Dark Urge origin and fully commit to Bhaal's influence. Power Word Ruin, by contrast, can damage any enemy regardless of health total, making it substantially more versatile for endgame encounters.
The mod currently exists only for PC and has not yet been ported to console versions. Bringing mods to PlayStation and Xbox requires approval from the respective platform holders, a process that typically takes considerable time. Whether this particular mod will eventually reach console players remains uncertain, though the modding community continues to develop new content for the game regularly.
Baldur's Gate 3 launched in August 2023 and has since become one of the most heavily modded games on PC, with the community regularly uncovering and repurposing unused content from the base game.
