The Blood of Dawnwalker contains numerous side missions beyond its main vampire-hunting narrative, including optional romance storylines and lengthy character journeys. One significant optional quest is Stronger Than Achilles, which unlocks after investigating the monastery with Anca and completing the Where Old Devils Lie quest. This mission culminates in a meaningful decision about the Font of Life, with three distinct outcomes that affect both gameplay and story.
Before starting Stronger Than Achilles, players should be aware that the entire quest consumes six time segments, so proper planning is necessary. The quest begins once you reach the temple containing the Font of Life, where you must complete three separate trials to access it.
The initial section involves navigating through the temple's lower levels while encountering undead enemies. After descending the stairs, you'll face a lone zombie followed by two more undead in the next chamber. Anca proves capable of handling combat independently, so you don't need to prioritize her defense. Continuing through the torch-lit hallways leads to a room with two zombies and two undead hounds. Defeat all of them and proceed until reaching a circular chamber where Coen and Anca face multiple Vidmos—aggressive, mobile enemies that can overwhelm in groups. Rely on Anca to draw enemy attention while you focus on eliminating threats.
The first trial requires approaching the statue in the chamber's center and placing your hand inside it, which causes significant slashing damage. While you can have Anca perform this instead, she will lose consciousness and Coen will feel ashamed. The hand injury causes no permanent damage, so proceed with Coen and heal with food afterward. Select the dialogue options "Alright… Wish me luck" and "[keep still]" when prompted. After the trial completes, consume food to restore health before moving forward through the newly opened door.
The second major obstacle is the Fallen Hero mini-boss guarding the next passage. Despite an intimidating appearance, this enemy has relatively low health and a straightforward attack pattern consisting of horizontal and vertical sword strikes combined with a close-range unblockable attack. The unblockable move—where the boss swings both swords forward—is the only attack worth dodging. Side-stepping this attack positions you directly next to the boss for free hits. Focus on parrying standard sword swings and striking during openings. Anca's assistance during this fight proves valuable for wearing down the enemy.
After defeating the Fallen Hero, a massive chasm blocks your path and triggers a cutscene where Anca reveals her intention to use the Font of Life for herself. This dialogue sequence explores whether you want to pursue romance with Anca, offering the opportunity to confess your love. Once you regain control, navigate the gap by jumping to the central platform, following the blood trail left, shimmying across the wall, and jumping to the stairs. Continue around the room's back until finding a crack in the wall to slip through. Clear the rubble in the hallway so Anca can rejoin you, then push open the door to discover a hidden chamber filled with paintings and sculptures worth examining in Focus Mode.
The final trial involves the Guardians of the Font boss fight, one of the game's most challenging encounters due to its wave-based structure. Approach the stone tablet and perform an incantation to activate the pillar, triggering the battle. The fight consists of multiple waves of ancient undead enemies, requiring careful crowd management. With Anca drawing aggro, attempt to fight only two to three enemies simultaneously. While individual undead move slowly, their sheer numbers create overwhelming pressure. Broad Swing and similar multi-target sword moves prove effective for dealing damage to multiple enemies at once. Each defeated warrior reduces the boss's health bar incrementally. Once all undead fall, a stronger warrior emerges with identical moves but significantly increased damage output. Maintain patient parrying and dodge unblockable attacks to the side until victory.
Upon defeating the Guardians, enter the newly opened doors to reach the Font of Life. After inspecting two murals on the walls, you learn the Font draws power from blood and black magic. Three choices determine the quest's outcome. Having Coen use the Font grants the Font of Life perk in the Witchcraft tree, providing passive health regeneration during daytime for the remainder of the game—the only way to obtain this ability. Allowing Anca to drink from the Font triggers unique epilogue cutscenes but offers no gameplay benefits. Destroying the Font instead awards Ancient Greaves, legendary heavy trousers with high armor stats, Witchcraft damage boost, activation recharge on block, passive activation charge, and magical damage reduction—unobtainable through any other means.
While no choice is objectively wrong, destroying the Font represents the stronger long-term option, particularly for activation charge builds, as the Ancient Greaves provide exceptional protection and damage benefits. Alternatively, having Coen use the Font offers consistent daytime healing throughout the game. Regardless of your decision, you'll return to the inn where you can finalize a romance with Anca if desired.
