One Piece is making franchise history by releasing its first movie without the Straw Hat Pirates at the center of the story. The announcement came during One Piece Day 2026 on August 23, marking a significant departure from nearly three decades of tradition.
The series, which debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump on July 18, 1997, has built its entire identity around protagonist Monkey D. Luffy and his pirate crew. The Straw Hat Pirates were officially established in chapter 6 just weeks after the manga's launch and have remained central to every major film release since the anime adaptation began in 1999. However, the upcoming One Piece Film: God Valley, scheduled for summer 2027, will break this pattern entirely by shifting focus to an entirely different crew.
Instead of following Luffy, the new film will center on Gol D. Roger and the Roger Pirates as they navigate the legendary God Valley Incident. This historical event was first mentioned in the manga and later explored in detail during the Elbaf arc, spanning chapters 1159 to 1166. The incident depicts a crucial moment when Roger and Luffy's grandfather, Garp, joined forces to dismantle the Rocks Pirates and protect the Celestial Dragons. The movie poster confirms the shift in focus by displaying the Roger Pirates' Jolly Roger instead of the Straw Hats' iconic symbol woven into the One Piece logo.
The God Valley film represents the first canon movie adaptation created directly by series creator Eiichiro Oda in collaboration with Toei Animation. Previous One Piece films, including Film Red, Film Gold, Stampede, and Film Z, all featured the Straw Hat Pirates as protagonists. This new direction allows the franchise to explore the backstory of the legendary pirate king and his crew members, including Scopper Gaban and Silvers Rayleigh, who played significant roles in the God Valley conflict.
According to the manga narrative, Rayleigh will have his own storyline involving the rescue of Shakky, while Gaban takes charge of securing treasure on the island, leading to Shanks joining Roger's crew. The film will showcase how Roger and Garp defeated Rocks, the primary antagonist of the incident, cementing their legendary status in the One Piece world.
The announcement also revealed a second upcoming film, One Piece Film: Baad, scheduled for 2029 release. However, fans need not worry about a permanent absence of Luffy and his crew. The God Valley flashback in the manga spans approximately 18 chapters before the narrative returns to the present timeline in Elbaf, where the Straw Hat Pirates resume their role as main characters. This ensures that future One Piece movies will continue to feature Luffy at the center of the action.
The God Valley film marks an unprecedented moment in One Piece's cinematic history, offering fans an opportunity to experience a pivotal chapter of the franchise's lore through the eyes of an older generation of pirates while maintaining the promise of the Straw Hats' eventual return to prominence.
