Microsoft is preparing to overhaul its Xbox achievement system by introducing a dedicated reward for players who finish games entirely. Asha Sharma, the chief executive officer of Xbox, recently acknowledged community demand for the feature and confirmed that an equivalent to PlayStation’s popular Platinum Trophies is currently in active development. Xbox is targeting a launch for this new feature in late 2026.
Since the introduction of Gamerscore during the Xbox 360 era, players have argued that fully completed titles blend in seamlessly with partially finished ones, making it difficult to display total mastery of a game. In contrast, Sony’s ecosystem has awarded a distinct Platinum Trophy for total completion across the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation 5. Specifics regarding the upcoming Xbox feature remain under wraps, with Microsoft yet to disclose its official name, design mechanics, or whether it will grant credit retroactively to existing 100% completions.
This upcoming addition narrows a major functional gap between the two rival platforms. PlayStation has long experimented with its trophy mechanics, offering profile level updates capped at rank 999, visual overhauls for the PlayStation 5 generation, and integration with reward platforms like PlayStation Stars. However, Xbox adopting a similar completion metric forces Sony to consider new ways to maintain its appeal to trophy hunters.
To retain its edge, PlayStation could implement fresh innovations to elevate its existing trophy structure. Suggestions within the gaming community include creating a new trophy tier beyond Platinum for players who clear all base content along with post-launch downloadable content packs. Additionally, Sony could address frustration surrounding discontinued multiplayer servers by auto-populating online trophies once online support ends, or introduce customizable profile showcases where players pin their proudest achievements.
As Xbox works toward its projected 2026 rollout, the competing platforms could drive a renewed focus on digital rewards, giving achievement and trophy enthusiasts across both platforms more options to display their gaming accomplishments.
