Grand Theft Auto 6 will operate at a locked 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles when it launches, according to statements made during a recent press visit to Rockstar North.
Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, disclosed the frame rate limitation to members of the press who were invited to preview the game ahead of an Extended Look premiere that aired on Netflix. YouTuber Davy Jones, one of the content creators granted early access to the title, shared this information during a subsequent livestream, revealing what Nelson had communicated about the game's performance specifications during development.
The 30 FPS cap aligns with Rockstar's historical approach to console releases. Both Red Dead Redemption 2 and Grand Theft Auto 5 launched with similar frame rate restrictions, establishing a pattern the studio appears to be continuing with its latest entry. Earlier speculation had suggested the possibility of both Quality and 60 FPS performance modes available at launch, but those reports have not materialized.
During his visit to the studio, Jones also confirmed that GTA 6 will not include a first-person mode at its launch, another detail that differs from some player expectations. However, industry observers have noted that Rockstar has historically introduced performance enhancements through post-launch updates. Multiple reports indicate that a 60 FPS mode may be added to the game after its initial release, following the studio's typical support pattern.
The current-generation console landscape leaves several questions unanswered. It remains unclear whether the PS5 Pro, the most powerful existing console hardware, will achieve 60 FPS performance at launch. Rockstar Games has not yet released official performance specifications for any console version.
Until the publisher provides comprehensive technical details, players considering hardware purchases specifically for GTA 6 may want to wait for official confirmation. Future console generations, including the rumored PS6 and Xbox Project Helix, could potentially deliver higher frame rates when they arrive.
