After discovering a cryptic reference in a book at the inn following your return from St. Tyna's with Anca, you and your companion realize that a legendary sword may be the key to stopping Brencis. The weapon has vanished, however, prompting Coen to seek out Albertus, a mysterious figure who might know its whereabouts. This decision triggers the A Monk And A Saint quest, which unfolds across multiple locations and presents different challenges depending on when you choose to visit the Cathedral.
Finding Albertus in the Middens
Your first objective is to locate Albertus, who resides somewhere in the Middens, a region west of Svartrau City. While the quest marker provides only a broad radius, you can narrow down the search by heading to the westernmost edge of the area. Look for a house covered in scribbles on its walls—these markings serve as a visual guide indicating you're on the right path.
When you enter the home, you'll find Albertus in a disturbed state, frantically writing on the walls. He's attempting to preserve text he's memorized and fears losing. Direct confrontation won't yield results, so instead, engage with his delusions by selecting specific dialogue options during your conversation. The correct sequence is picking up charcoal, then responding with references to Abelard the Sorrowful, Svartrau Plaza, his penance and redemption, never entering a particular location, and finally mentioning St. Mihai as a great warrior who arrived in Vale Sangora. This exchange reveals that the sword lies in a crypt beneath Svartrau Cathedral.
Daytime Approach to Svartrau Cathedral
The Cathedral stands as one of the most prominent structures in Svartrau City, making it easy to locate. Upon entering, you'll witness a baptism ceremony. If you've progressed through the story, you may recognize Father Florin as the priest present during a significant event in Laslea. You can acknowledge this connection or deflect, though the outcome remains unchanged. Florin will invite you to confess, an optional interaction that consumes a time segment but involves selecting sins while he offers prayers and cryptic remarks about your future significance.
After Florin departs, use Focus Mode to identify key figures in the Cathedral: a believer, an acolyte, a deacon, and a craftsman. The deacon is essential to your quest. He claims ignorance about any crypt but will grant you access to the library if you agree to help locate the missing caretaker. Speaking with the believer and acolyte provides access to the treasury and St. Mihai's chalice, which supports a separate quest but isn't mandatory for this objective.
The deacon directs you to the Almshouse, a building on the church grounds. Inside, you can pay an asylum resident for information or proceed upstairs through the first door. You'll discover a small room with a bookshelf blocking a doorway. Inspecting the scratch marks on the floor reveals the blockage, allowing you to access a chamber containing plague victims reduced to skeletal remains. Descend the stairs to confront the Almshouse Monstrosity, a challenging enemy you may want to save before engaging. After defeating it, use your Compel Soul ability to communicate with a corpse and learn about Radu's involvement in a catastrophic event. Collect the caretaker's key from this room.
Return to the deacon with this information to gain library access. The Cathedral Library sits in the courtyard to the right. Ascend to the upper floor and locate a book surrounded by golden butterflies near a desk. Reading this book reveals the crypt's location within the graveyard. If you obtained St. Mihai's chalice earlier, you already possess his symbol. Otherwise, use the caretaker's key to enter his building in the same courtyard area, loot the chest for broken stained glass, and bring it to the craftsman for repair. Once you have the symbol, proceed to the graveyard and clear leaves from the second-to-last grave slab. Match the symbol to open the crypt entrance.
Nighttime Approach to Svartrau Cathedral
Visiting at night creates a substantially different experience. Enter from the main left entrance and use Shadow Step to climb scaffolding along the tower's right side. Drop to the platform below to spy on the interior. Be cautious, as dropping may alert Xanthe, forcing a boss fight that could prove difficult depending on your level. If you prefer to avoid this confrontation, remain on the scaffolding and pillars while inspecting the ceiling for clues about St. Mihai. The relevant clues appear on scaffolding near the front where Xanthe conducts her ceremony.
Exit to the courtyard and investigate the well in the center after hearing howling, which initiates the Night Terrors quest. You'll find kobolds below; defeat them and use Focus Mode to locate a wall near a lit torch and a corpse. The corpse belongs to a thief who attempted to reach the crypt for the silver sword. Push the boulder revealed by Focus Mode to escape the well and emerge among the graves. Locate the second-to-last grave, recognize St. Mihai's symbol, and open the crypt.
Entering the Crypt and Confronting St. Mihai
Regardless of your approach, the crypt sequence unfolds similarly. After saving, descend into the crypt and find a large chamber with a cracked wall. Break through to discover St. Mihai, who immediately engages you in combat. Following the fight, you'll learn the sword is broken and that St. Mihai, like Coen, is a Dawnwalker. He dies shortly after sharing this revelation, concluding the A Monk And A Saint quest and triggering the Forge It Anew quest to restore the weapon. If you entered during the day, you can compel St. Mihai's spirit to share additional details about his death after collecting items in the room. Loot thoroughly before departing, and consider completing other quests first if the subsequent repair quest seems challenging for your current level.
