The original Castlevania is now available to download and keep for free on mobile devices as part of the franchise's 40th anniversary celebration. Konami is running the promotion through October 24 at 9:59am EST, and players who grab the game during this window will retain access to it indefinitely, even after the giveaway ends.
The 1986 NES title represents one of gaming's most foundational works, establishing half of what would eventually become the Metroidvania formula. The game combines 2D side-scrolling action with demanding platforming mechanics, creating a template that countless developers have built upon over the decades. Playing the original offers a chance to experience the purest form of the 'vania' concept before it merged with Metroid's exploration and progression systems.
Castlevania's legacy took a significant turn with Symphony of the Night, released a decade after the original. That 1997 sequel introduced interconnected level design and ability-gated progression, fundamentally transforming how the series played and influencing an entire genre. Modern Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous owe a direct debt to that evolution, making the original game an essential historical reference point.
While the first Castlevania may feel dated compared to contemporary entries in the genre, that simplicity is precisely what makes it worth revisiting. The game eschews modern design conventions like skill trees, cluttered maps, and extensive backtracking requirements. Instead, it focuses on straightforward gameplay: Simon Belmont, his whip, and Dracula's castle. This stripped-down approach provides valuable perspective on how game design has evolved.

For players preferring more content, Konami is also discounting the Castlevania Anniversary Collection on Steam by 80 percent, bringing the price down to $3.99. The bundle includes eight classic Castlevania titles spanning multiple generations of hardware, along with a historical book covering the series' development. The collection offers a comprehensive look at how the franchise evolved across Nintendo and Sega platforms throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
