Hideo Kojima's upcoming spy-action title Physint will now be published by Xbox instead of PlayStation, marking a significant shift in the game's development trajectory. The move comes after PlayStation Studios informed Kojima Productions in mid-June that it intended to cancel the project entirely.
Kojima responded by spending three months searching for an alternative publisher willing to fund the game's continued development. In a statement posted to social media, Kojima explained that he was determined to keep the project alive and ultimately found a suitable partner in Xbox. He described Physint as an important project for both himself and his studio, and emphasized that development remains on track under the new publishing arrangement. The game is positioned as a genre-defining action-espionage experience.
PlayStation released its own statement characterizing the separation as a mutual decision made after careful consideration. The company maintained that it continues to respect Kojima's creative vision and emphasized the strength of its long-standing relationship with the legendary developer, citing three decades of collaboration. PlayStation indicated openness to future projects with Kojima Productions.
Xbox also issued a statement celebrating the partnership, though the circumstances suggest a more pragmatic business arrangement than a straightforward vote of confidence. Both major console manufacturers have faced significant challenges in recent years. Sony has grown cautious following numerous failed investments in live-service games, while Microsoft has conducted substantial layoffs and shuttered several first-party studios in an effort to concentrate resources on franchises with proven commercial appeal. Kojima's projects appear to represent an exception to Microsoft's recent cost-cutting measures, with the horror title OD having survived the company's purge of development studios.
The publishing change could have implications for the game's platform availability. Xbox has generally shown greater willingness to release single-player titles on PC compared to PlayStation, suggesting that Physint may have a better chance of reaching computer platforms under its new publisher. However, the switch also introduces considerations related to ongoing boycotts of Microsoft based on reported military connections, which some consumers factor into purchasing decisions.
Physint joins OD as another Kojima Productions title under Xbox's publishing umbrella, indicating Microsoft's commitment to backing the acclaimed developer's vision despite broader industry consolidation and financial pressures.
