The official Dragon Ball website has highlighted Tien Shinhan in a recent character feature, pointing to his pivotal actions in Dragon Ball Z as proof of his status as Earth's strongest human warrior.
Anime fans have debated the title of strongest Earthling for decades, usually placing Tien Shinhan and Krillin at the top of the list. While Yamcha once claimed Krillin held the title during the Majin Buu arc, that statement was largely made to soothe Krillin's young daughter, Marron. Meanwhile, Tien was absent from the group at the time, leaving his actual power standing open to interpretation.
The franchise's official portal recently published its Weekly Character Showcase, focusing on Tien during the climax of the Majin Buu Saga. Dubbing him an underdog with a heart of gold, the feature highlights the pivotal moment when Tien used his Tri-Beam technique to destroy a fatal attack aimed at Ultimate Gohan by Buutenks, who was the most formidable threat in the universe at that moment.
Tien's intervention saved Gohan's life and briefly altered the course of the battle, leading Goku to temporarily consider fusing with him using the Potara earrings. Additionally, Tien managed to survive Super Buu's devastating Human Extinction Attack, whereas Krillin perished alongside several other Z-Fighters on Kami's Lookout. This accomplishment stands as one of the most impressive feats achieved by a non-Saiyan Earthling in the entire original anime run.
Looking beyond the Majin Buu arc, Tien repeatedly demonstrated superior combat achievements throughout the series. During the Cell Saga, he famously stalled Semi-Perfect Cell using his Neo Tri-Beam, giving Android 18 time to escape. He also fought Androids 17 and 18, whereas Krillin took a less active combat role during those events after his earlier highlights in the Saiyan and Namek storylines.
Since the original Dragon Ball series created by Akira Toriyama, Tien has consistently built an impressive martial arts record, including a historic tournament victory over Goku. While modern iterations like Dragon Ball Super and Dragon Ball DAIMA feature fewer dramatic moments for human martial artists, the official recognition reaffirms Tien's peak capabilities at the end of Dragon Ball Z.
