Marvel has unveiled plans to discontinue its Unlimited subscription service and introduce a replacement app developed in partnership with Webtoon, the digital comics platform. The new Marvel Comics app will debut worldwide on November 16, 2026, marking a significant shift in how the company delivers its vast back catalog to readers.
The launch timing appears strategic, arriving just one month before the theatrical release of Avengers: Doomsday. The new app will feature over 35,000 titles at launch, encompassing Marvel properties alongside Star Wars content—roughly equivalent to the current Unlimited library. This suggests Marvel intends to port its existing collection to the new platform.
The transition period spans roughly six weeks. Unlimited has already stopped accepting new subscribers. Beginning December 7, the app will cease receiving fresh content, and users will retain reading access through December 21. The complete shutdown occurs on December 28, 2026. During this window, subscribers can transfer their personal libraries and reading history to Marvel Comics, provided they complete the migration by December 7. However, active subscriptions cannot be transferred directly. Instead, Marvel will refund any prepaid subscription time that extends beyond the December 28 shutdown date, and users can apply those refunds toward new subscriptions on the replacement platform.
Marvel Comics will operate on a two-tier subscription model. The standard tier costs $9.99 monthly and grants full library access with a three-month delay on newly released comics. The Ultimate tier, priced at $12.99 per month, provides the same catalog but delivers new releases just 30 days after publication. Both tiers include the same content library; the distinction lies solely in release timing for new material.
The redesigned app emphasizes accessibility and personalization for both longtime fans and newcomers. It supports both traditional page-based reading and vertical scrolling formats, catering to different reading preferences. The interface will feature personalized recommendations based on individual reading history and preferences, alongside dedicated character and creator pages to help readers track specific story arcs and follow particular creators. These additions aim to lower barriers to entry for audiences unfamiliar with Marvel's extensive catalog.
The partnership with Webtoon, an established leader in digital comics distribution, suggests Marvel is leveraging proven expertise to enhance its platform. The rebrand represents more than a simple app update; it reflects a broader strategy to modernize how readers discover and consume Marvel content in an increasingly competitive digital entertainment landscape.
