Crimson Desert's Charting the Unknown expansion introduces multiple new systems to the game, each with its own unlock requirements. Rather than a single narrative thread, the DLC spreads content across sailing, romance, housing management, and combat challenges, giving players several paths to explore.

The sailing system forms a major pillar of the expansion. Players can begin building their first ship after completing the "Expanding the Camp" objective within the "Gathered Will" quest, which is part of the Greymane faction's "Grounds of the Sunrise" storyline. Once this quest unlocks, progressing through the shipbuilding questline opens access to the new ocean-focused narrative, which involves exploring the dangerous coastline and islands of Pywel. For those wanting larger vessels, medium ships cost 1.2 million camp funds to purchase or build, while large ships require 6 million funds to buy or fewer funds but more materials to construct.
The Garden of Trials combat challenges become available only after finishing the main story. To access them, players should visit the Axiom Archive in the abyss—the location where they first encountered Alustin early in the game. From there, turning right before the building's main staircase and entrance reveals a corridor leading into the new annex where these trials take place. Additionally, the expansion includes fresh story quests for the characters Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane, which activate after the main campaign concludes. These quests take place in Pailune and Demeniss and feature new combat encounters scattered throughout the world.
Romance options have been added for the three main characters. Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane can each pursue relationships with specific NPCs. Players can determine if an NPC is a romance candidate by checking their interaction menu. Building a relationship requires reaching 100 trust points with the NPC, at which point the "seduce" option becomes available. Once likeability reaches its maximum, players can "propose" to formalize the relationship. The four witches offer new faction quests designed to help players accumulate trust and likeability with potential romance partners. Married characters can either follow the player or stay at their house, and divorcing is possible if players wish to end a relationship.
New housing and facility management systems round out the expansion. Unlocking the Greymane Camp on Howling Hill and completing Luke's request during "Grounds of the Sunrise" opens access to upgraded housing options. Acquiring this camp also reveals facility icons across the map, indicating which strongholds can be rented and converted into management facilities. However, players must first liberate each region and complete its associated faction quest before they can use a facility for management purposes.
