Grinding Gear Games has announced Expansion 3.30 for Path of Exile, titled 'Covens of Umbra', bringing two interconnected progression systems centered on boss encounters and character customization. The expansion launches on November 13 and was officially unveiled during ExileCon 2026 in Auckland, New Zealand, on November 7.

The expansion's narrative backdrop involves an ancient conflict between witch covens. Players work alongside Moira, a witch magically imprisoned by the covens, to gradually dismantle the power structure of a centuries-old coven organization. The ultimate goal is confronting the Coven Queen, the primary antagonist driving the league's story.
The 'Fate' system forms the first pillar of the expansion's mechanics. After completing coven-related combat encounters, players draw Fate cards from a cauldron, each providing a distinct empowerment effect. These cards can be applied to area bosses, increasing the difficulty of those encounters while proportionally boosting the rewards upon victory. Harder-modified bosses yield more substantial loot. As players progress through areas, the frequency of coven encounters increases, allowing collection of four to five Fate cards per region. Players may apply up to three Fates to a single boss, and specific combinations trigger additional bonuses. Duplicate Fates applied to the same boss triple the reward from the original Fate card. Potential rewards include item rarity increases, exclusive support gems, and unique flasks.
The 'Wicker Man' system provides character empowerment through harvesting defeated bosses. When players defeat a Fate-enhanced boss, they may obtain 'Viscera'—body parts including flesh, bones, skin, and carapace—from that encounter. These parts can be affixed to a Wicker Man structure, granting the player a portion of the defeated boss's power as a persistent character buff. The Wicker Man accommodates up to four equipped body parts, divided among head, arm, torso, and leg slots. Each campaign and Atlas map boss provides unique body parts across three rarity tiers, with the highest tier restricted to endgame content. This design encourages players to repeatedly target specific bosses to obtain desired buffs.
In the endgame, the 'Grim Fate' variant targets pinnacle bosses. Players obtain Grim Fates by defeating Fate-empowered bosses in high-level Atlas regions, then apply them to specific pinnacle encounters. These applications fundamentally alter boss attack patterns—for instance, transforming Sirus's storm mechanics into swirling crows or causing dark energy beams to emerge from Uber Elder's portals. Defeating Grim Fate-enhanced pinnacle bosses yields significantly more powerful body parts than standard encounters and serves as a prerequisite for accessing the final confrontation with the Coven Queen.
The league's progression structure revolves around a cycle: players collect Fate cards to enhance bosses, defeat those empowered bosses to harvest body parts, and equip those parts to strengthen their character. This dual-difficulty system allows players to voluntarily increase combat challenge while simultaneously gaining power, creating a scalable difficulty curve. By providing unique body loot for every campaign and map boss, the expansion gives players renewed incentive to engage with existing boss encounters throughout their playthrough.
