A sequel to the survival horror title Dead of Darkness has been officially announced, bringing new content to PlayStation 4 and other platforms nearly thirteen years after the console's launch. The original Dead of Darkness arrived on PlayStation 4 in July 2025 and has accumulated an average user rating of 4.72 out of 5 across more than 230 reviews.
Dead of Darkness 2 will maintain the isometric survival horror style of its predecessor while introducing significant changes to the setting and cast. Where the first game took place on a mysterious English island, the sequel relocates the action to Pennsylvania. Players will encounter entirely new protagonists rather than returning characters, offering a fresh narrative perspective within the established world.
Retrofiction Games, the solo developer behind the series, has confirmed the sequel will launch on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, with enhanced visuals planned for the newer hardware. The most substantial gameplay addition is seamless character switching, allowing players to transition between different protagonists and continue from their unique perspectives. The sequel will also incorporate 90s anime-inspired animations that serve as cutscenes, adding visual variety to the experience.

The sequel retains the classic Resident Evil-influenced mechanics that made the original successful, including inventory management systems, though with a redesigned interface. The trailer reveals new weapons such as the Thompson SMG alongside familiar survival horror tools. Dead of Darkness 2 will expand the character roster significantly, featuring 28 playable characters compared to approximately 15 in the original game. This expanded cast may help address criticism that the first game's narrative felt underdeveloped, potentially adding greater emotional depth and story complexity.
Beyond PlayStation platforms, Dead of Darkness 2 will release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Publisher Eastasiasoft is handling distribution across these platforms. However, an exact release date has not been announced. Given that Retrofiction Games operates as a solo developer, the launch timeline remains uncertain. Interested players can already add the game to their wishlists through the PlayStation Store to receive notifications when the release date is confirmed.
