Bandai Namco Entertainment's latest aerial combat title, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, has achieved 1 million copies sold worldwide in under a week, marking the fastest sales milestone in the franchise's three-decade history.
The publisher confirmed the achievement on October 9, just one week after the game's official launch on October 2 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Players who purchased the Deluxe Edition gained access starting September 29. The rapid sales pace reflects strong demand from both longtime series enthusiasts and players new to the franchise.
Ace Combat 8 represents the first mainline installment in seven years, following 2019's Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. Bandai Namco Studios and Bandai Namco Aces, a studio established in 2022, collaborated on development. The game takes place in Strangereal, the series' fictional world, depicting a 2029 conflict between the Federation of Central Usea and the Republic of Sotoa. Players assume the role of an ace pilot bearing the storied callsign "Wings of Theve," fighting alongside squadron members as the FCU faces invasion.
Technically, the title leverages Bandai Namco's proprietary cloud rendering engine, Cloudly, to generate expansive skies covering up to 10,000 square kilometers with complex multi-layered cloud systems. Multiplayer features support lobbies with up to 100 players and cooperative gameplay modes, which the company describes as the largest multiplayer offering in series history.
The sales surge builds on the franchise's established momentum. Ace Combat 7 accumulated over 7 million copies sold worldwide by January of this year. Combined with Ace Combat 8's new sales, the series has now exceeded 22 million units shipped globally since its 1995 debut. The franchise remains Bandai Namco's flagship title in the flight shooting genre, known for blending authentic military aircraft with arcade-style gameplay, distinctive worldbuilding, and narrative depth.
