Following its split from Xbox, Double Fine has revealed its first game as an independent studio: Thank You Bus Driver, a quirky simulation that blends transportation management with absurdist humor.
The game tasks players with operating a bus route, picking up and dropping off passengers at designated stops within strict time limits. The twist lies in a set of passenger conduct rules—no sleeping, no toenail clipping, no unpleasant odors—that riders frequently violate. When infractions occur, the driver's solution is straightforward: slap the offending passenger. This mechanic creates the game's central tension. While monitoring the rearview mirror helps track passenger behavior, actually delivering a slap requires turning around, which risks colliding with oncoming traffic. Players must therefore juggle enforcement duties against the pressure of meeting arrival deadlines.
The difficulty escalates as new rules appear randomly throughout each route, forcing constant vigilance. However, performance carries rewards. Passengers who experience good service offer thanks, which translates into additional time for subsequent stops. Players can also unlock cosmetic upgrades for their bus dashboard, explore different town settings, and access other unlisted content.
Double Fine studio head Tim Schafer discussed the studio's transition during an interview, reflecting on the period when the possibility of closure emerged. He described his mindset shift from initial concern to determination, framing the situation as one where the studio's fate rested in his own hands rather than external forces. Schafer expressed confidence in the project's potential, suggesting strong interest from people eager to support the studio's work.
Thank You Bus Driver currently lacks a confirmed release date but is available to wishlist on Steam. The announcement arrives as Double Fine pursues other ventures, including a game jam initiative funded through Kickstarter that includes Brutal Legend 2 as a stretch goal. The studio's return to independence marks a significant shift after years under Xbox's ownership, positioning Thank You Bus Driver as a statement of creative direction for the newly autonomous developer.
