Double Fine Productions is leveraging its newly independent status to pursue long-dormant projects, including a cheeky $100 million stretch goal for Brutal Legend 2 as part of a game jam Kickstarter campaign. Now that the studio is no longer owned by Microsoft, it has regained creative freedom to develop sequels to beloved franchises that were previously off-limits.
The Kickstarter funds Amnesia Fortnight, Double Fine's biennial two-week game jam event that has been running since 2007. During the jam, the team rapidly prototypes new game ideas. Previous Amnesia Fortnight projects have evolved into full releases, including Costume Quest and a Psychonauts 2 spin-off called Compton's Cook-off. This year's campaign shifts the funding model by giving backers voting power to determine which prototypes become finished games.
Backers who contribute will vote on a slate of 30-second pitch videos showcasing various prototype concepts. Four finalists advance to a second round of voting, with the winner receiving full development into a complete, albeit smaller-scale, game. Among the pitches are Emergency Foley Artist, a party game in the style of Jackbox titles where players add humorous sound effects to scenes, and Uprise, a kite-flying racing game with alien invasion themes.
While the Brutal Legend 2 goal is framed with self-aware humor—the most successful Kickstarter ever raised under $47 million for a 3D printer—Double Fine's willingness to include such an ambitious stretch goal reflects the studio's newfound independence and creative confidence. The campaign demonstrates how regaining autonomy from corporate ownership has allowed the team to pursue projects that were previously restricted.
As with previous Amnesia Fortnight events, Double Fine is documenting the entire process in a behind-the-scenes documentary. Given the studio's recent transition back to independence and subsequent staff reductions, the documentary may provide insight into how the team is navigating this new chapter. The campaign offers supporters a chance to directly influence which prototypes become playable games while contributing to the studio's continued operations.
