Helldivers 2 is experiencing its latest round of review bombing following Arrowhead Game Studios' decision to replace the game's anti-cheat protection system. The studio recently deployed an update that transitioned the title from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat, a change that has frustrated the player community and caused the game's Steam rating to drop to "Mixed" status, with recent reviews sitting at 57% positive.

The core issue centers on the impact this anti-cheat switch has had on cosmetic modifications. Many non-gameplay mods that simply alter visual elements have stopped functioning as a result of the transition. Players have responded by leaving negative reviews en masse, with nearly every complaint directly attributing the problem to the Easy Anti-Cheat implementation. This marks another instance in what has become a pattern for the live-service shooter, which has faced review bombing campaigns multiple times since its launch in February 2024.
Arrowhead acknowledged the concerns in its official announcement, stating that the studio recognizes mods as fundamental to PC gaming culture and appreciates the creativity behind cosmetic modifications. However, the developer emphasized the need to combat modifications that provide unfair competitive advantages or negatively affect other players in shared lobbies. The anti-cheat update specifically targets gameplay-altering mods that can impact the experience of players who haven't installed them, a problem the studio says has become increasingly prevalent.
The silver lining for the modding community lies in Arrowhead's clarification that cosmetic mods are not permanently blocked by Easy Anti-Cheat. The studio indicated that non-malicious cosmetic modifications may require updates from their creators to remain functional, suggesting that as mod developers adapt to the new anti-cheat system, these additions should resume working. This indicates the current breakage is likely temporary rather than a permanent incompatibility.
Despite the review bombing and player frustration, Helldivers 2 continues to maintain a substantial active player base. The game remains one of 2024's surprise hits, and Arrowhead has already outlined its content plans extending into 2026, with new features and updates still in development. The studio's willingness to explain its reasoning behind the anti-cheat change suggests it views this as a necessary step to preserve the competitive integrity of its multiplayer experience, even as it acknowledges the immediate disruption to the modding ecosystem.
