Creative Assembly and Sega's newly released Total War: Shogun 2 remaster is facing severe backlash from players, earning an "Overwhelmingly Negative" rating on Steam with only 19% positive reviews. The remaster, marketed as an "updated, enhanced, and complete version" of the 2011 strategy classic, has accumulated 1,337 negative reviews against just 318 positive ones.
Players report that the remaster fails to address longstanding bugs from the original game while introducing fresh technical problems. Issues include desynced cinematic audio, broken hotkeys affecting unit selection, and notably worse performance compared to other modern titles in the series. One reviewer noted that the primary motivation for porting older games to 64-bit architecture—improved stability and performance—has not materialized. Additionally, the remaster removed Steam Workshop support that was available in the original version.
A particularly controversial aspect involves the apparent use of generative AI for visual elements. Multiple players allege that unit cards and character artwork were created or upscaled using AI technology, with visible defects including missing fingers and limbs. Creative Assembly did not disclose this use of AI on the game's store page, prompting criticism from reviewers who feel misled about the remaster's quality and production methods.

The pricing strategy has also drawn ire. The original Total War: Shogun 2 was delisted from Steam to make way for the remaster, though existing owners receive a discount on the new version. However, this discount expires, after which players must pay the full $40 asking price for what many describe as an inferior product. The original game's removal eliminates access to its Steam Workshop community content, forcing players toward the problematic remaster if they wish to continue playing on Steam.
Reviewers characterize the release as a "cash grab," citing the combination of unresolved decade-old bugs, new technical issues, undisclosed AI artwork, and worse performance than the original game even with community mods applied. The remaster represents a significant misstep for a beloved classic, disappointing fans who hoped for genuine improvements rather than a monetized re-release with compromised quality.
