Microsoft has rolled out a disc-to-digital conversion feature that allows Xbox owners to claim digital licenses for their physical game discs at no additional cost. The functionality, announced during Xbox Gamescom, is currently available to participants in the Xbox Insiders program and began rolling out on August 31, 2026.
The disc-to-digital system works by letting players insert an eligible physical disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console equipped with a disc drive, then claim a permanent digital license for that title. Once converted, the game becomes playable without requiring the disc to remain in the console. Notably, converting a disc does not invalidate or destroy the physical copy—the disc itself remains usable and can be stored or resold separately. However, if a converted disc is sold to another person, that buyer cannot claim the same digital entitlement, as the license transfers only with the original owner.
One significant advantage of the conversion process is potential access to expanded versions of supported games. Titles that support Xbox Play Anywhere allow players to access the corresponding PC version through their digital entitlement, effectively giving them the game on multiple platforms without additional purchase.
The conversion process is straightforward and requires only a few steps. First, ensure your console is running the latest preview system software that includes the disc-to-digital feature—this requires being an Xbox Insider in the Alpha or Alpha Skip-Ahead rings. Insert the eligible game disc into your console's drive and allow it to install. Once installed, select the game, press the Menu button, and choose "Claim Digital License" from the available options. Confirm your selection in the subsequent window. If the game qualifies for conversion, you will immediately own the digital version and can remove the physical disc. Games that are ineligible for the feature will display an error message during this process.
Not all Xbox titles are currently supported by the disc-to-digital feature. Microsoft has begun the rollout with thousands of eligible games in the Insider program and plans to expand the library over time. Players should verify whether their specific discs are eligible before attempting conversion, as incompatible titles will fail to convert.
The feature is presently limited to Xbox Insiders participating in the Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead testing rings. Microsoft has not announced a specific date for broader public availability, though the company indicated the feature will eventually roll out to all players. The gradual rollout allows Microsoft to test stability and expand the catalog of supported titles before a general release.
This disc-to-digital capability addresses a long-standing request from console owners seeking greater flexibility with their game libraries. By eliminating the need to maintain physical discs for digital access while preserving the physical copies themselves, the feature bridges physical and digital ownership models.
