Phantom Blade Zero has become one of the most acclaimed action games in recent memory, earning an 88 on Metacritic and securing the title of best-reviewed Chinese game of all time. The title surpassed contemporary releases like Nioh 3 and Onimusha: The Way of the Sword in critical reception and attracted a remarkable player base on Steam for a single-player experience. However, some players expressed disappointment that the game, despite drawing clear inspiration from the Soulslike genre, did not fully commit to that formula.
While Phantom Blade Zero incorporates numerous Soulslike elements—including bell checkpoints that function similarly to Bonfires, heavy emphasis on parrying and dodging, rhythmic boss encounters, and interconnected exploration reminiscent of classic FromSoftware titles—it deliberately deviates from the genre's core mechanics. Enemies do not respawn after being defeated, players retain their Remnant Dust currency upon death rather than losing it, and bosses resume at the phase where they were left off instead of resetting to their initial state. This design choice created a distinct experience but left some players wishing for a more traditional Soulslike challenge.
A modder known as PVLW has addressed these concerns by releasing Phantom Souls on Nexus Mods, a comprehensive overhaul that transforms Phantom Blade Zero into a genuine Soulslike experience. The mod reintroduces enemy respawning after players rest at bells, though defeated enemies yield only 25 percent of their normal Remnant Dust on subsequent defeats to maintain balance. Consistent with Souls games, enemies remain dormant until a bell is rested at for the first time, preventing early-game frustration.

The modification also implements the series' signature death penalty system. Players now drop their accumulated Remnant Dust upon death and have a single opportunity to recover it before dying again—a mechanic that becomes increasingly punishing as wealth accumulates. According to early testing, this change forces players to spend resources strategically rather than hoarding them.
Boss encounters receive significant adjustments as well. Rather than resuming at the phase where players left them, bosses now reset to their opening phase upon player death, creating a more demanding experience. The mod includes a death counter to track failures and maintains all other gameplay systems unchanged.
PVLW appears committed to expanding the mod's scope. Additional features already include a Boss Rush mode and mechanics that drain Sha-Chi—the game's energy resource—when performing normal attacks and dodges. Optional difficulty modifiers allow players to increase parry and dodge complexity, adjust controller layouts to match Souls conventions, or multiply enemy damage output. The mod also supports cosmetic character swaps, enabling players to experience the game as characters from other franchises.
These modifications provide players who desired a stricter Soulslike experience with the option to fundamentally reshape how Phantom Blade Zero plays, while those satisfied with the original design can continue enjoying the game as intended.
