The Tokyo Game Show has canceled its final day of operations as Typhoon Dujuan bears down on the Japanese capital. Organizers announced that Monday, September 21 will no longer take place, and tickets for that day will be refunded to attendees.
This marks an unexpected end to what was supposed to be a historic milestone for the event. The 2026 show was planned as the first five-day Tokyo Game Show in the event’s three-decade history. In a statement, organizers cited safety concerns as the primary reason for the cancellation, noting that strong winds and heavy rain are forecast to intensify throughout the afternoon and beyond. Transportation disruptions also factored into the decision, with organizers emphasizing that ensuring the safe return home for all attendees, exhibitors, and staff took priority.
The showfloor will continue operating on September 20 as originally scheduled, though the organizers have indicated there may be modifications to how the event runs that day. Publishers and developers who had secured booth space specifically for the final day have not yet received clarity on how the cancellation will be addressed or whether alternative arrangements will be offered.
Typhoon Dujuan is the 25th named storm of 2026 and is expected to bring severe weather to the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo. Meteorological forecasts predict nearly 16 inches of rainfall in the area. The approaching storm has already prompted major transportation providers to suspend service: Nippon Airways has canceled numerous flights throughout the region, while the East Japan Railway has fully or partially suspended operations on several lines.
The abbreviated schedule represents a significant change from the organizers’ original plans for the expanded event. Despite the shortened duration, the Tokyo Game Show remains one of the gaming industry‘s major annual showcases, drawing developers, publishers, and fans from around the world to experience upcoming titles and announcements.
