The arrival of daggers in Lineage Classic's Pirate Island update has sparked renewed discussion about weapon selection, yet most players still rely on affordable gear rather than heavily enchanted alternatives. A comprehensive analysis comparing five established +6 one-handed swords against the new Steel Dagger reveals surprising findings about which budget weapons truly deliver the best value.
The weapons tested included Katana, Damascus Sword, Silver Sword, Mail Breaker, and Rapier, each offering distinct characteristics at +6 enchantment. Katana excels with high base damage of 10 against small targets and 12 against large ones. Damascus Sword delivers 10 small and 11 large damage while providing non-damaging properties. Silver Sword matches Katana's large-target damage at 12 and features silver material composition. Mail Breaker compensates for its low 4/5 damage output with a substantial +10 Melee Hit bonus and Oriharukon construction. Rapier, also made from Oriharukon, achieves the highest small-target damage at 11. Steel Dagger rounds out the comparison with 6/5 damage but distinguishes itself through notably faster attack speed.
When calculating damage per second under realistic hunting conditions—specifically Stage 2 Haste combined with Sharna Transformation Scroll—the results paint a clear picture. Against small targets, Rapier leads at 265.2 DPS, followed closely by Katana and Damascus Sword at 254.2. For large targets, Katana and Silver Sword tie for first at 276.3 DPS. Despite its speed advantage, Steel Dagger ranks fifth against small targets and trails behind Katana, Damascus Sword, and Silver Sword against large targets. The transformation scroll narrows the attack speed differential sufficiently that base damage becomes the dominant factor, leaving Steel Dagger unable to compensate through speed alone.
The picture shifts dramatically when targeting undead enemies, where certain weapons gain material-based bonuses. Rapier, Silver Sword, and Mail Breaker each trigger random bonus damage between 1 and 20 per hit against undead, averaging approximately 10.5 additional damage per strike. This nearly doubles their effective damage output. Rapier achieves 497.3 DPS against small undead while Silver Sword reaches 508.3 against large undead. Mail Breaker, which ranks lowest against normal targets, deals roughly 1.6 times more damage than Katana when fighting undead. Conversely, Katana, Damascus Sword, and Steel Dagger lack material bonuses and cannot compete in undead-heavy zones, making material properties a critical consideration for frequent farming in such areas.
For Steel Dagger to match weapons like Katana or Damascus Sword through flat bonus damage alone would require unrealistic buffs. Under Stage 2 Haste with Sharna, the attack speed gap narrows to approximately 8%, meaning Steel Dagger would need around +15 flat bonus damage to catch Katana and Damascus Sword against small targets, and +28 to +34 against large targets—figures that are practically unattainable. Only against Silver Sword's small targets does the requirement drop to approximately +3, making that scenario the sole realistic catch-up scenario.
However, raw DPS calculations tell only part of the story. Actual hunting involves frequent missed attacks due to level gaps between characters and monsters, a factor that dramatically shifts practical performance. Field testing previously conducted on the Lineage Classic community board demonstrated that Mail Breaker achieved superior efficiency despite its theoretical DPS disadvantage. A Level 34 Knight testing +6 Mail Breaker, Rapier, and Saulabi Longsword in the Land of the Abandoned over six 10-minute sessions per weapon found Mail Breaker delivered higher average experience efficiency than Rapier, which boasted superior firepower on paper. Mail Breaker's +10 Melee Hit proved decisive in an environment where accuracy gaps outweighed raw damage. While character levels have increased since then, hunting grounds have scaled accordingly, keeping accuracy equally vital. Unless players have progressed beyond Death Level, Mail Breaker remains the top-performing budget option. Damascus Sword retains niche utility for weapon maintenance, whereas Steel Dagger offers no special properties and must compete purely on DPS—a category where it lacks meaningful advantages.
The optimal weapon choice ultimately depends on character level and target type. Players struggling with hit rates should prioritize Mail Breaker, particularly for zones like the Land of the Abandoned, which contains only small undead monsters in the level 30-50 range, or the recently added Shadow Temple ATS zone with its 50/50 split of small and large undead. Once reaching Level 52 with adequate accuracy, Rapier excels in small-monster areas, Katana or Silver Sword suit large-monster zones, and Rapier or Silver Sword with material bonuses dominate undead-dense regions. Damascus Sword merits consideration for those prioritizing low maintenance costs. While Steel Dagger offers the experience of dagger attack speed, its value as a +6 budget weapon remains limited. Budget-conscious players unable to invest heavily should maintain their current one-handed sword until accessing proven high-end alternatives such as Crystal Dagger or Oriharukon Dagger.
