Xbox's new disc-to-digital conversion feature, now available to Insider program members, has proven capable of unlocking digital licenses for games that are no longer sold on the platform's store.
The feature allows players to insert physical discs into their Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console and obtain permanent digital versions of those titles. While Microsoft has not released a comprehensive compatibility list, the company indicates that thousands of games released for current-generation consoles support the conversion. Early testers within the Insider community have begun documenting which titles work, with encouraging results for previously unavailable games.
Notably, the system functions on delisted titles—games removed from digital storefronts years ago. Xbox Insider Nicholas Maguire was among the first to demonstrate this capability, converting a physical copy of Deadpool, which was delisted approximately nine years prior, into a playable digital license. The same tester confirmed that Transformers: Devastation also works through the conversion process.
Other delisted games confirmed compatible include Rock Band 4, Titanfall, and Minecraft: Story Mode, according to reports from gaming outlets tracking Insider findings. These successes have generated speculation about potential future expansion to older console generations, though significant technical barriers exist.
The disc-to-digital conversion relies on unique identifiers embedded in Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S physical media. These identifiers authenticate the disc and enable the digital license transfer. Original Xbox and Xbox 360 discs lack this technology, making similar conversion systems for those older platforms technically unfeasible without alternative solutions that Microsoft has not yet developed.
The feature represents a meaningful option for players with physical game libraries who wish to transition to all-digital ownership, particularly for titles no longer available through traditional digital channels. As more Insiders test the system, the community continues mapping out compatibility across the extensive Xbox One and Series X|S catalog.
