Visual Arts, the developer behind beloved visual novel and game franchises, announced on October 19 that Jun Maeda, a core creative figure at the company's Key brand, has been diagnosed with pharyngeal cancer and has chosen palliative care to manage his condition.
Maeda, who serves as scenario writer and composer for Key's flagship titles including 'AIR', 'CLANNAD', 'Angel Beats!', and the mobile RPG 'Heaven Burns Red', began experiencing throat discomfort in early spring. As swelling and severe pain intensified through summer, medical evaluation confirmed the cancer diagnosis. Currently hospitalized, Maeda opted for symptom-focused palliative care rather than aggressive treatment, prioritizing his ability to continue creative work during his remaining time.

'Heaven Burns Red', launched in 2022 as a collaboration between Visual Arts and WFS, is a hero-collector RPG centered on girls wielding a weapon called the Seraph to battle mysterious entities threatening humanity. The game has built a dedicated audience by blending daily-life storytelling with high-stakes combat, drawing on Maeda's signature themes of youth overcoming hardship. The development team previously announced Chapter 6 as the main story's final chapter, with the conclusion promised in an upcoming update.
According to Visual Arts' statement, Maeda has completed all writing, lyrics, and music composition for Part 1 of Chapter 6, as well as key story segments leading toward the chapter's conclusion. However, the company cautioned that his ability to contribute further scenario writing or composition beyond this point depends on how his condition develops.
Maeda was also developing a new music project as a creative venture, originally planned for long-term YouTube release. Given his limited production time, the approach has shifted to completing the envisioned tracks as quickly as possible and releasing them sequentially online rather than spreading them across an extended timeline.
Visual Arts established dedicated contact channels for fan messages and letters of encouragement, noting that while individual responses will not be possible, all correspondence will be delivered to Maeda. The company requested that fans send letters only, declining other gifts.
In closing, Visual Arts acknowledged the sudden nature of the announcement and expressed that despite his hospitalization, Maeda maintains a strong commitment to creative work. The company asked for fan support and understanding during this period.
