Just over a week after its launch, Mortal Shell 2 has received its first substantial update, introducing new gameplay items, world improvements, and addressing several mechanical issues that players encountered during early play.
The patch brings three new consumable items to the game. Fragile tarstones represent a new category of consumable that degrades and breaks after use. A glimpse stone similarly wears down as players defeat enemies before eventually shattering into glimpses. Perhaps most notably, Egon's stone offers a revival mechanic at the dungeon entrance, though using this ability costs the stone's durability. When the stone finally breaks, players avoid losing gloom on that particular death, providing a safety net for challenging encounters.
Navigation and exploration have been enhanced through additional beacons placed throughout Fainweald and Mammon, though these beacons only function during daytime. The developers have also scattered new items throughout the world and reset certain problematic chests. Players who complete specific questlines can now obtain cosmetic headpieces, including designs resembling a hand-stitched frog and a potato sack with an eyehole cut into it.
Riposte mechanics received substantial attention in this update, addressing longstanding issues with damage calculation. Riposte damage now scales according to enemy health, making progression through New Game Plus and night mode less punishing than before. The developers also improved riposte recovery timing, allowing players to regain control faster after executing these attacks. A critical fix ensures riposte damage calculates and applies correctly, eliminating cases where it either doubled or failed to register entirely. Additionally, invulnerability windows during ripostes are now consistent throughout the entire animation rather than expiring partway through.
Enemy tracking and magnetism parameters have been adjusted to provide more forgiving mechanics, with the developers indicating these values will continue to be fine-tuned individually in future patches. The update addresses numerous cutscene issues where characters would awkwardly turn away or stare blankly at objects. Performance has been improved in several areas by reducing enemy counts in densely populated zones.
Beyond these headline changes, the patch includes numerous additional tweaks, fixes, and adjustments detailed in the full patch notes. This update follows a balance patch released on launch day, demonstrating the developer's commitment to refining the Soulslike experience based on early player feedback.
