Square Enix is permanently closing the servers for Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis on October 6, rendering the mobile and PC game unplayable after that date. The free-to-play gacha title, which reimagined the original Final Fantasy 7 story alongside its various spin-offs, has already been removed from digital storefronts, though players who downloaded it beforehand can continue playing until the shutdown occurs.
Ever Crisis launched in 2023 and attracted millions of downloads during its lifespan, but the game failed to maintain sufficient player engagement to justify continued operation. While the game will no longer be accessible after October 6, this marks another setback for Square Enix's attempts to create successful live-service experiences within the Final Fantasy 7 universe. The company previously released Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier, a battle royale title that shut down after just two years in 2021, unable to compete in an oversaturated market.

The shutdown of Ever Crisis follows a broader pattern of live-service Final Fantasy games reaching their end of life. Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius operated for nearly a decade before closing in 2024, though its successor, Final Fantasy Resonance, will preserve some of that game's legacy. Additionally, the mobile version of Final Fantasy 14 was discontinued, though the mainline PC and console versions of the MMORPG remain fully operational.
Despite these closures, Square Enix's flagship live-service titles continue thriving. Final Fantasy 11, now 24 years old, still maintains an active player base and regularly welcomes new players. Final Fantasy 14 remains the company's primary focus for live-service Final Fantasy content, receiving substantial free updates alongside major premium expansions that keep the community engaged.
On a brighter note for franchise enthusiasts, Final Fantasy Resonance is launching on October 22 this month. The new game will feature an extensive roster of beloved characters spanning the entire Final Fantasy series history, offering longtime fans a nostalgic experience. Early impressions of Resonance have been positive, suggesting the title may succeed where other recent live-service Final Fantasy projects have faltered. For those looking to experience Ever Crisis before it vanishes, the window to do so closes on October 6.
