Game Freak, the studio behind Pokémon, has unveiled an unconventional new project: a mobile role-playing game whose mechanics shift based on actual weather conditions in the player's location.
The title, Amenochi Hare Onna, centers on a group of magical girls called the Sunny Girls and their creature companions known as Kumorin. Set in modern-day Japan, the narrative follows these characters as they use their weather-altering powers to uplift communities across the country. The protagonist is Himawari Haruto, whose character design comes from Aki Minamino, known for her work on the Gakuen Idolmaster series. Her Kumorin partner, Arai Pon, was created by an internal Game Freak designer.
The game's core mechanic revolves around hanging laundry, with outcomes directly tied to local weather patterns. Game Freak partnered with Weathernews, a major Japanese forecasting service, to integrate accurate weather data into gameplay. Creator Shigeru Omori explained that the concept emerged while he was reviewing a weather forecast for laundry purposes, leading him to ask: why not build a game around checking the weather daily?
Game Freak plans to share additional details during a livestream event on September 14, broadcasting from Weathernews headquarters. The presentation will cover voice acting talent, further development insights, and how weather data will shape player experiences. Broadcaster Airi Yamagishi will host the event. Currently, the studio has confirmed a Japan-only launch, with international availability still undetermined.
This project marks another attempt by Game Freak to establish an identity beyond Pokémon, the franchise that has defined the company for decades and generated hundreds of millions annually. While Pokémon remains the studio's dominant property, Game Freak has developed smaller titles throughout its history, including the Mega Drive platformer Pulseman. A more recent effort, 2019's Little Town Hero, attempted to launch a new IP with turn-based RPG mechanics but received lukewarm reviews and struggled commercially.
Game Freak's next major release remains Pokémon Winds and Waves, which will launch the tenth generation of mainline Pokémon games. A Nintendo Direct presentation months earlier revealed an archipelago setting inspired by Polynesia, enhanced graphics following criticism of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, and seamless ocean traversal between islands. The game will introduce hundreds of new creatures to the franchise.
Whether Amenochi Hare Onna can carve out its own audience remains uncertain, but the weather-driven gameplay concept represents a distinctive departure from Game Freak's typical design philosophy. The mobile space offers the studio a lower-stakes environment to experiment with novel mechanics before potentially scaling successful ideas to larger platforms.
