Nomad Games is bringing a digital version of Avalon Hill's HeroQuest to Steam, expanding the beloved dungeon-crawling board game into a digital experience. The adaptation will feature the core gameplay loop of monster slaying, trap navigation, treasure collection, and magic spellcasting that defined the original.
The digital edition will support multiple play modes. Solo players can face off against the computer-controlled Evil Wizard and his forces, while online multiplayer accommodates up to four players taking on hero roles. An optional fifth player can assume the role of Zargon, the game's antagonist, adding an asymmetrical multiplayer dimension to the experience. The version is based on the American release of the board game.
Nomad Games has previously adapted several tabletop titles for digital platforms, including Talisman, Love Letter, and Fury of Dracula, bringing their experience with board game conversions to this project.
A standout feature is the inclusion of a quest editor that allows players to design their own maps and missions. The editor integrates with mod.io, enabling the community to share custom content and download creations from other players. This user-generated content system could significantly extend the game's longevity beyond the included scenarios.
The digital adaptation may incorporate mechanics from HeroQuest First Light, a recent expansion to the board game. One particularly useful addition would be the streamlined movement option that allows players to move a fixed eight squares per turn rather than rolling dice when no monsters are present on the board, reducing downtime during exploration phases.
HeroQuest: Digital Edition is scheduled to launch on Steam in 2027. A closed beta playtest is planned to begin soon, giving early players a chance to test the adaptation before its full release.
