Microsoft appears ready to launch a successor to its aging Elite Controller Series 2, with detailed specifications emerging from the company's own Xbox Design Lab backend. A Reddit user uncovered configuration records and 3D component models for the device, codenamed Edessa, revealing a significant upgrade path for the controller that debuted seven years ago.
The most notable improvements involve the analog sticks and haptic feedback systems. The Elite Controller 3 will reportedly offer a choice between Hall-effect and TMR magnetic sensing technologies, a departure from the potentiometer sticks in the Series 2 that have been prone to drift issues. The haptics system will also receive an overhaul, moving from traditional rumble motors to voice-coil actuators similar to those found in PlayStation 5 DualSense controllers, enabling more nuanced trigger vibration feedback.
Customization options appear extensive. The controller will feature multiple D-pad styles including standard, cross, and grippy variants, along with various paddle configurations such as standard, classic, and double-wide designs. Players will be able to select from different faceplate materials and finishes, with options for metal designs, extensive color choices, and engraving capabilities. A dedicated audio scroll wheel represents another new addition to the feature set.
The leak indicates Microsoft plans to release the controller in multiple configurations. Four SKU combinations are reportedly planned, including "Elite Complete" and "Elite Base" versions, each available with or without motors. Additional features mentioned include low-friction silent sticks and support for 27 different topper and paddle mappings.
While the specifications come directly from Microsoft's own systems, some skepticism remains within the community. Critics questioned whether Microsoft would develop its own Hall-effect joysticks and noted the continued absence of built-in gyro functionality. The source files have since been removed from Xbox Design Lab's backend. Industry observers expect an official announcement soon, as previous leaks and reports of early retail listings suggest a launch could be imminent.
