Nintendo of America has won a $4.5 million damages award in a legal action against an individual accused of distributing unauthorized copies of Switch titles. The defendant, James Williams, who operated online under the username Archbox, did not appear in court to contest the lawsuit, resulting in a default judgment in Nintendo's favor.
Nintendo filed the original complaint in 2024, alleging that Williams functioned as the primary operator behind multiple illegal distribution channels known as Pirate Shops. The company's legal team sought to shut down these operations, which allegedly offered extensive libraries of pirated Nintendo Switch games available for download to the public.
Williams was reportedly associated with moderation duties on a Reddit community dedicated to Switch piracy, though he no longer appears to hold that position. As part of the court's ruling, Williams has been instructed to immediately cease operations of any online shops under his control that distribute unauthorized Nintendo content. The default judgment underscores Nintendo's continued aggressive enforcement of its intellectual property rights, though in this instance the company faced minimal courtroom opposition given the defendant's absence from proceedings.
