Amber Originals has unveiled Station 58, a 3D puzzle adventure game that tasks players with reconstructing a national park torn apart by mysterious forces. The game was announced on October 8 by Amber, the global developer behind the project.
The narrative centers on Barcadero National Park, which has been shattered into floating pieces by an unknown phenomenon. Players assume control of park ranger Starla Pines and a towering robot companion named Shorty as they work to recover the scattered park sections and investigate the origin of strange alien cubes that have materialized throughout the landscape.
Gameplay revolves around the complementary abilities of the two protagonists. Starla's compact frame allows her to navigate tight spaces and traverse challenging terrain, while Shorty's considerable strength enables him to relocate heavy objects and break through barriers. The design emphasizes puzzles that exploit these physical differences, such as sequences where Shorty launches Starla across expansive gaps. Beyond solo play, the game includes local cooperative gameplay for two players on a shared screen.
The park itself spans diverse biomes, from dense forests and desert oases to underground caverns and waterways. Exploration reveals hidden artifacts and creatures, though players must contend with carnivorous plants, aggressive animals, and environmental hazards along the way. Scattered throughout are alien cubes containing intricate puzzles involving block manipulation, switch activation, and portal mechanics. Solving these puzzles disables the cubes' power sources and advances the story.
Reconstruction forms a key gameplay pillar alongside puzzle-solving. Players restore the park by discovering lost zones and repairing damaged infrastructure like bridges and facilities. Recovered areas can be repositioned around Station 58, creating new pathways and revealing secret locations based on their arrangement. The mystery deepens through broadcast recordings left by missing radio personality Tumbleweed, which shed light on the park's fate.
The project draws from the personal life of Game Director Dustin Hansen, who drew inspiration from family camping trips and nature exploration. His family members directly contributed to development: his son Tanner created concept art and user interface designs, while his daughter Valkyrie handled animation, environmental art, and production oversight. Voice acting came from another daughter, Mallory, who portrays Starla, and his son-in-law Parker, who voices Shorty. This family-centered development process mirrors the game's core theme of shared exploration.
Station 58 is planned for release on PC through Steam, though no launch date has been confirmed. Players interested in the title can add it to their Steam wishlist and register for playtest opportunities through its store page.
