Phantom Blade Zero has become a viral hit on Steam, but players are encountering a significant problem: the game freezes when controllers are connected. The issue stems from conflicts between Unreal Engine 5 and Bluetooth drivers, as well as background software wrappers that interfere with controller input. Developers have acknowledged the problem and are working on an official patch, but several workarounds can help players resolve the freezing in the meantime.
The most effective solution involves changing how your controller connects to the game. If you're currently using a wireless controller, try switching to a wired connection, or vice versa. Wireless controller drivers—particularly Bluetooth stacks for PlayStation DualSense and Xbox Wireless Controllers—can create continuous input polling loops within the game engine. Even minor fluctuations in wireless signal strength can trigger freezes or crashes to desktop. Additionally, remove any wireless dongles connected to your PC and avoid using USB hubs, as these can exacerbate the problem.
Another approach is adjusting Steam Input settings, which can resolve conflicts between Steam's controller wrapper and the game's native drivers. Open your Steam Library, right-click Phantom Blade Zero, and select Properties. Navigate to the Controller tab and test different override settings. For PlayStation DualSense or DualShock 4 controllers, disable Steam Input if you want native haptics and direct communication over a wired connection. For Xbox or third-party controllers, enable Steam Input to force Steam's unified translation layer. After making changes, close the window and relaunch the game.
Disabling conflicting background overlays is equally important. Steam, Nvidia, Discord, and other overlay applications can cause random crashes and freezing. Turn off the Steam Overlay by going to Steam Properties and toggling off the in-game overlay option. In Discord, navigate to Settings, select Game Overlay, and disable the in-game overlay feature. Graphics overlays should also be disabled, including Nvidia ShadowPlay and GeForce Experience, AMD Software Adrenalin, and RivaTuner or MSI Afterburner.
If none of these workarounds resolve the issue, the only remaining option is to wait for the official patch that developers have committed to releasing. In the meantime, experimenting with these solutions should help most players get back to enjoying the game without interruption.
