Square Enix has announced a delay for Final Fantasy 14's upcoming Evercold expansion, pushing its release from January to February 2, 2026. The news came from director Naoki Yoshida during the opening day of the game's 2026 Fan Festival in Tokyo.
Yoshida revealed that the development team had been working to meet the original January target and was running "just barely" on schedule. However, quality concerns prompted the decision to allocate an additional three weeks of development time. While this represents a relatively modest delay in the broader context of game development, it carries more weight for a live service title like Final Fantasy 14, where expansion releases set the pace for ongoing content and community engagement.
Preorders for Evercold will open on Wednesday, November 4. Players who preorder will receive early access to the expansion beginning February 19, giving them a head start before the official launch on February 2. This marks the first major expansion since Dawntrail released in July 2024.
The delay comes as the Final Fantasy 14 community anticipates significant changes coming with Evercold. The expansion is expected to introduce a combat overhaul alongside a new class featuring a distinctive design: a viking-inspired warrior wielding dual shields, laser cannons, and claw weapons. Recent additions to the game, including a new roguelike mode, have generated positive reception and set expectations for the expansion's gameplay improvements.
Final Fantasy 14 has maintained a notably engaged player base in recent years. The community's response to the game's direction has been mixed, with observers noting the title occupies an interesting position within the MMORPG landscape heading into the Dawntrail era. Yoshida's willingness to extend development time for quality assurance suggests the team is prioritizing delivering a polished experience over meeting an arbitrary deadline, a decision that may resonate with players invested in the game's long-term health.
